FROM DAR HANSON
SKANDIA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH- CHRISTMAS 1895
OH, IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK.
The Hanson Family history is deeply woven into every pew of this little church.
The photograph is an early confirmation ceremony in Skandia, Michigan performed at the church our great grandparents PEHR and KRISTINA HANSSON helped build. Great uncle CHARLIE (KARL) HANSSON and my grandpa AXEL HANSSON are the last two kids on the right. They were about 9 and 10 years old. This only a few years after the boys father had drown. The church stands in 2011 and is still active. My parents, RUDY and PEARL HANSON were married here as well as my brother DOUGLAS HANSON and his wife MELISSA. In the early days LEONA HANSON COPPO remembers Grandma KRISTINA being in charge of preparing the coffee (almost a religion in itself for swedes). She would make it in huge urns with egg shells in it to cut any bitterness. She also remembers grandma KRISTINA tugging at her braids when she was wriggling around at church and not paying attention. (I guess thats universal!) Both she and Verle recall OTTO HANSON (Leona's Dad) singing beautiful duets with his sister IDA (Verles Mom). OTTO was devasted when his big sis died too early and swore he would never do another duet and never did after that. This is the same church CLARA PETERSON WILSON recited a poem she had written about KRISTINA and PEHR's journey to America. She also sang at that 1985 family reunion. When the piano player at the church lagged a bit during the performance, she stopped singing, banged on the piano and said " comon' lets step it up a bit!" and continued right on singing her song.
I love the fresh greenery inserted with flowers at the alter, the old fashioned oil lamp overhead and those snappy hats the girls wore. The photo is somewhat sun faded, but my brothers look very much like my grandpa AXEL at that age.
This blog will be specifically for the Hanson line. Our stories will be about anyone related to Rudolph and Pearl Hanson, forward and backwards. As we share these stories about our loved one we will come to know and feel who they were(are); who we are and where we have come from. When posting please use the labels, use full names.. The labels will help us search in the future.

GRANDMA PEARL VISITS CALIFORNIA
FROM DAR HANSON
This is a pic of Mom (Pearl Hanson) when she visited me in California during the 80's- my cat kids LOVED gramma- she spoiled them rotten of course- lots of kitty stories WHERE THE CAT ALWAYS WINS,, jars of GERBER BABY VEAL in her yarn bag- a billion toys-- they pouted for 2 weeks after she left - SO even for cat kids THERES NOBODY LIKE GRAMMA!!
Mom loved all creatures great and small and was a firm believer that the family pets were FAMILY!
and by the way, we had a great time- a limo ride to Beverly Hills, a trip to Santa Anita to see the thoroughbreds and dinner with Chef Bardot at the famous Marianne French Restaurant where I worked the door for 12 years. I was proud to use recordings of her piano pieces as backround music there. My customers loved it.

FROM DAR HANSON
I originally gleaned the top photo of Clara Peterson from the West Branch book. She is the daughter of Henry and Sarah Peterson and grandaughter of Erick and Matilda Peterson, my great-great grandparents. My grandmother, Anna Shaw Hanson was her first cousin. Clara married Martin Wilson. The second shot is my nephew Brian's wife Amy- the arbitor of posting knowledge! altho not related by blood, i think she looks like cousin Clara- yes? she is also a fellow swede...where did Brain find her??

Where do I start in describing the impact the famous "Egor" experience (a.k.a. "Turn out the lights") had on my childhood? Oh man, my friend Jamie, niece Heather, obviously Ethan, and numerous others to this day talk about that feeling of loving the game but petrified by the anxiety of potentially getting found and "tortured" by "Egor".... I think about all of the time Dad took out of his evening of relaxation to make us all laugh, scream and run. I know his back was hurting so much at that time of his life, so I appreciate the sacrifice even more. (And Damn, Dar--that's why he always found me in my favorite hiding spot--cuz it was the same as yours!) To date, still one of my greatest memories. Better than ANY Haunted House!

Twas' The Night Before...Deer Season?
FROM DAR HANSON
This is a deer hunting poem from a log book at an old yooper deer camp..it was found and published in the Marquette Mining Journal..Leona Hanson Coppo transcribed this in a letter to me in her own hand. She lives in Flint, Mich and is 91 this year.
Deer season was almost a religion in Skandia from back when the town was first founded- deer were plentiful and a good source of protein for hungry families eking out a living in those hard times...
this poem is to read like " 'Twas the Night before Christmas"....

3 Generations of Egor
From Dar --
Doug, Matt and Grandpa Rudy |
I think each "Egor victim" should post his/her favorite hiding place during this Hanson ritual. This game was also called "Shut Out the Lights". Great story Ethan!
OX AUNTIE DAR" (My favorite hiding spot was under the coats in the broom closet in the kitchen!)
