When Rudy and Pearl were young and my brother Dave was a toddler, they lived for awhile in one of those little silver round edged airstream trailers. it had abreviated versions of all the amenities, including a little couch. Mom had been pouring over magazines advertising the new "sectional" couches- apparently all the rage of that era. One day Pearl thought she'd "surprise" Rudy with her own version..they didn't have the money (or the space), so she decided to cut the couch in half, sew fabric over the raw ends and put a lamp in the middle. (like a Lucy episode). So mom started sawing away and Dave kept saying, "I don't think dad's going to like it"...(at this point of the storytelling, mom is
laughing and dad is glaring at her). She said dad came home from a long day at the plant and just stared at the couch, trying to compute what he was seeing...mom was sitting on one of the "sections" READING A MAGAZINE! the rest is history...
