Abt 1955-70 The Canyon

Behind our home was about 100 acres of fields and a hill with a graveyard on top. For years the soil was being dug out of half the hillside, hence the canyon. We used to jump off the cliffs and slide down the dirt paths that were created by the diggings. One time there was an excavator (we always called it a crane) sitting in the field that we climbed on and pretended to drive it. The keys were in it so we started it. We did not try to drive it, but can you imagine the damage a 10 and 11 year old could do with that big monster.
Another time we were digging in the side of the hill only to discover human bones. We dug several out and our friend Gary Grimes took a skull for show and tell to school. The police showed up and soon after forced the construction company to shut down operations and move the graves across town to a proper grave site before all could commence again.
